A first desired goal
Zinédine Zidane was born on June 23, 1972 in Marseille, France. Passionate about football, he began playing club football at the age of 9. He was finally noticed by AS Cannes, where he joined their training center when he was a teenager. He made his professional debut there in 1989, when he was 17, during a Ligue 1 match.
He had to wait until 1991 to score his first goal, during a match against FC Nantes, a magnificent goal on a lob. Positioned as an attacking-midfielder or central midfielder, he has an amazing technical mastery, including a silky touch on the ball.
A true playmaker at heart, he has impressive dribbling quality in his efficiency, a destructive slowness because he is perfectly mastered. Capable of fantastic gestures, he stood out from other players on the field by his aura and his vision of the game worthy of the greatest players in the history of this sport.
The outbreak in the Europa League
In the summer of 1992, he joined the Girondins de Bordeaux after AS Cannes was relegated to the French second division. At the Girondins, he met Bixente Lizarazu and played alongside Christophe Dugarry, this trio will be notable for its triangle play.
Zinédine Zidane will change status with the 1995/96 UEFA Cup, during the round of 16, he scored a 40-meter lob against Real Betis. During the quarter-finals, he made a double of assists against AC Milan in the return match and qualified Bordeaux for the rest of the competition.
He again provided 1 assist in the semi-finals, and for the final which was played in a two-legged match, he was suspended for the first leg, a 2-0 defeat by the Girondins de Bordeaux, in the return, the player could not change the situation, a 5-1 victory on aggregate.
Departure to Juventus, 1998 World Cup and Ballon d'Or
In the summer of 1996, he joined Juventus Turin with the aim of following in the footsteps of a certain Michel Platini who had left his mark on football and the Italian club. At Juventus, he found his teammate in the national team, Didier Deschamps who was the club captain. His first two seasons in Italy allowed him to become a superstar in world football, winning the Serie A in 1997 and 1998.
He then returned to France for a summer to play in the 1998 World Cup, a competition in which he experienced the worst and best of his character. During the first match, against South Africa, an easy victory, he already received a yellow card. During the second match, against Saudi Arabia, he cracked and received a red card in a fit of anger.
He returned during the quarter-final, against Italy, where he had a masterful match: 120 minutes played, 113 balls touched, 78% of successful passes, 5 key passes, 8 successful through balls, 10 ground duels won, 1 aerial duel won, 4 fouls received and 3 interceptions.
During the match against Croatia, his contribution was less and it took an exploit from Lilian Thuram who scored twice for France to qualify. But it was during the final that the player would forever inscribe himself in the history of football, he scored twice with his head, two goals from corners. This double was historic and projected France to win the World Cup, 3-0 against Brazil. The first world title in the history of this country. At the end of 1998, he won the Ballon d'Or.
A magnificent Euro 2000
Zinedine Zidane then became the icon of French football and also participated in Euro 2000. He scored a goal against Spain and then had one of the best games of his career against Portugal in the semi-finals. He scored another goal and had an almost perfect game: 118 minutes of play, 128 balls touched, 81% of successful passes, 4 key passes, 100% of successful deep passes (9/9), 9 successful dribbles out of 10, 17 ground duels won out of 25 and 4 fouls received.
The French team, which has not changed much since the 1998 World Cup, seems even stronger and is becoming more powerful with the experience of the players who now know each other very well. He won the Euro final after a golden goal from David Trezeguet.
The Galacticos playmaker
However, at club level, the player failed to win the Champions League, he failed twice in the final, in 1997 against Borussia Dortmund and in 1998 against Real Madrid. He then decided to leave Juventus Turin in 2001 to join the Real Madrid Galacticos team.
His transfer to Real Madrid is historic, 75 million euros for the 29-year-old player who is considered one of the best in the world. This amount is a record at the time. It will only take one season for Zidane to confirm his good choice to join Real to win the Champions League, in 2002, he wins the mythical trophy with the big ears and scores one of the most legendary goals in the history of football against Bayer Leverkusen, in this 2-1 victory of the Casa Blanca.
At Real Madrid, he is considered the technical player par excellence, the playmaker of this team made of stars. With his precise passes and silky dribbling, he amazes audiences around the world week after week. In 2002, he participates in the World Cup but is injured and misses the start of the competition, eliminated prematurely, France disappoints without its magician.
At club level, the Galacticos struggle to convince over time and they leave one by one. Still winning a few trophies, he arrives at the World Cup as a player at the end of his career, at almost 34 years old. Suffering from pubalgia, the player thinks about hanging up his boots.
The worst and the best : his 2006 World Cup
Having come out of the group as best he could, France faces Spain in the round of 16, both the Spanish players and the country's press taunt the player they want to "send into retirement". Instead, it is Zidane, El Magnifico, who will eliminate Spain: 1 goal scored, 1 key pass, 84% of successful passes, 100% of successful deep passes and 2 interceptions.
In the next round, France, led by Raymond Domenech who has little influence in the locker room (Zidane and other senior players being the leaders of the locker room) faces Brazil. That day, Zidane will be the most Brazilian player on the pitch, technical gestures, ball control, fantastic passes, everything is there. He delivers the decisive pass that gives his country the victory.
In the semi-final, he scores the winning goal against Portugal and takes an aging French team to the World Cup final, this final will be one of the most iconic in history. Especially because of Zidane. The player who scores one of the most beautiful goals in history on a successful panenka on penalty against Buffon, will crack under the insults towards his sister from Materazzi.
Zidane still has a fit of anger, he headbutts the Italian player in the chest who collapses, the referee who did not see the action will give him a red card following the requests of the Italian players and the non-protest of Zidane. This action will be the last of the player's career, a final that shows both the player's talent and his lack of composure at times.
He leaves the ball in a long walk, passing next to the World Cup trophy, a World Cup that France will lose on penalties. Zinédine Zidane then retires from football, on this iconic act.
