A decisive midfielder

Viktor Kolotov was born on July 3, 1949 in Yudino, USSR. He began his career in the Chaika Zelenodolsk club where he scored no less than 23 goals in 38 games while playing in midfield, in this third division club of the USSR, he was quickly spotted by Rubin Kazan where he played until 1970.

He was then recruited by Dynamo Kyiv where he played 292 games and scored 81 goals in 10 years. Three times he exceeded ten goals scored in the Russian championship, in 1971, 1972 and 1975. At that time, he was undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the world.

With Dynamo, he was part of one of the best teams in the history of football. He won 6 USSR championship titles and 2 USSR Cups. But it was on the European stage that he would make a name for himself internationally. In total, he played 15 European Champion Clubs' Cup matches, scoring 4 goals. He also played 14 UEFA Cup matches, scoring 2 goals, and 9 Cup Winners' Cup matches, scoring 2 goals.

Often decisive in big moments for his club, he played with Dynamo Kyiv in the quarter-finals of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1973 and 1976. His greatest achievement with his club remains the victory in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1975 as part of a dream team that made all of Europe dream with its fast, direct and offensive play. He also won the UEFA Super Cup in September 1975 against Bayern 1-0.

A legend of USSR football

Viktor Kolotov was an exceptional midfielder, very versatile and complete, capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder or defensive midfielder. He had great game intelligence, allowing him to always position himself well on the pitch.

He is also a legend of USSR national football where he was an important starter between 1970 and 1978. In total, he played 55 official matches for his nation, scoring 22 goals. For his first match with the USSR, during a friendly match against Yugoslavia, he already scored his first goal in the 4-0 victory.

Then in 1971, he scored a hat-trick in a friendly match against India, an easy 5-0 victory for the USSR. He then participated in Euro 1972 where he lost in the final 3-0 against West Germany. A few weeks after this tournament, he participated in the Olympic Games and scored 3 goals in 6 games, winning the bronze medal.

He also participated in the 1976 Olympic Games where he played 5 games for 2 goals, and he won the bronze medal again. It was in 1978 that he scored his last two goals for the USSR, in a friendly match against Finland, an easy 10-2 victory. In total, he was a leader of the USSR, appearing 13 times as the team captain.
