Robert David Slater

Born November 22, 1964 in Ormskirk (ENG)

Australian, Central-midfielder, Defensive-midfielder, Left-midfielder, 1m80

Nickname: "Journeyman"

Promising beginnings and failure in Belgium

Robbie Slater was born on November 22, 1964 in Ormskirk, England. He moved to Australia as a child, where he played football. He signed his first professional contract with Saint-George Saints in 1982, when he was 18 years old. With the Australian team, he won 1 Australian championship title.

Then he joined the Blacktown City Demons team and the Sydney Croatia team, winning 1 Australian Cup. Approached in 1983 by a European club, and more precisely Nottingham Forest, he finally returned to the old continent via a Belgian club, RSC Anderlecht.

The legend of RC Lens

Blocked in midfield by the competition and in particular players such as Charly Musonda, Milan Jankovic and Patrick Vervoort, he had a blank season, not playing a single match during the season. He finally signed at the end of the season for a new club, RC Lens, a club playing in the French second division at the time.

In the North of France, he discovered teammates with whom he would shine, Roger Boli and Pierre Laigle. He allowed the club to move up to the French first division in his first year at the club. A hard-working midfielder, he made runs and sacrificed himself for his teammates, a tireless midfielder.

His progress was dazzling and he won the Oceanian Ballon d'Or in 1991, his trophy was awarded during a historic RC Lens - Olympique de Marseille match in February 1992. This match is etched in the memories of supporters of both clubs and those of French football, because it broke the club's attendance record: 48,912 supporters present. But especially because 3 Ballon d'Or winners will receive their trophy: Jean-Pierre Papin the European Ballon d'Or, Abedi Pelé the African Ballon d'Or and therefore Robbie Slater the Oceanian Ballon d'Or.

The player with exceptional endurance benefited from incredible physical condition, capable of easily chaining efforts. His talent will allow him to win a second Oceanian Ballon d'Or in 1993.

Complicated end of career in England

Robbie Slater left RC Lens in 1994 after 4 years at the club, 127 matches played and 9 goals scored. Appreciated by the supporters of the French club for his kindness and sympathy, he then joined England at 30, at Blackburn Rovers. There, he was not an essential part of the team but he had a historic season for the club, winning the Premier League.

He continued his adventure in England, but he went unnoticed, a player who no longer impressed as he did in France. He finally returned to Australia in 1998, before retiring in 2002, aged 38.
