The Argentine genius
Raimundo Orsi was born on December 2, 1901 in Avellaneda, Argentina, the son of a father of Italian origin, he began his career in 1920 during an Argentine championship match, he quickly became the best player of Independiente. With his club, he won 2 Argentine championships in 1922 and then in 1926.
A very fast left winger with impressive physical qualities, he was renowned for his dribbling quality and his body feints which had the talent to eliminate opposing defenders with great ease. Over the years, he became an excellent finisher and no longer limited himself to centering the ball to other attackers.
Beginning his international career in 1924, he won the Copa America in 1927 and then participated in the 1928 Olympic Games, during this tournament, he impressed the crowds and was spotted by the Agnelli family who would recruit the player.
The best winger in the world
At Juventus Turin, the small winger would become one of the best players in the world, both a regular in club and in the Italian national team. He will also be one of the major architects of a crazy series of 5 Serie A championship titles between 1931 and 1935 with crazy seasons in all competitions:
1930/31: 36 matches played, 21 goals
1931/32: 38 matches played, 24 goals
1932/33: 36 matches played, 15 goals
1933/34: 30 matches played, 10 goals
1934/35: 21 matches played, 4 goals
He also finished top scorer in the Mitropa Cup in 1933 with 11 goals. In total, he played 194 matches for the Old Lady and scored 88 goals and became one of the club's greatest legends where he was a key figure in the "Golden Quinquennium", the name given to this dominant team in the championship.
An impressive longevity
With his status as one of the best players in the world, the winger would play with the Italian national team and be a regular between 1929 and 1935, the date of his return to Argentina. In total, he played 35 matches for Italy and won the 1934 World Cup with a team made up of many Juventus Turin players. With 3 goals scored during this World Cup, he finished in the tournament's best team. He also scored the equalizer in the final 10 minutes from the end of the match.
In 1935, after dominating the Argentine championship, the 33-year-old player who was on the downward slope decided to return to Latin America and to the club of his youth, Independiente. He returned there to be closer to his family and especially to his mother, who was ill.
After a good season, scoring 9 goals in 32 games, he decided to play for Argentine clubs before leaving Argentina again and starting a road trip in South America. Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, wherever he went his talent was notable. He finally retired in 1943 when he was 42 years old. Addicted to sports betting, he loved betting on Juventus victories and even more on his own goals.
