The legend of Portuguesa
Pinga, whose real name is José Lázaro Robles, was born on February 11, 1924 in São Paulo, Brazil. He began his career in 1943 at Juventus-SP at the age of 19. Very quickly, he established himself in the club's starting team.
A very high-quality left winger, he is very fast and has an impressive finishing quality. He used to play with his brother, Arnaldo Robles. He left his first club for Portuguesa in 1944. There, he will score a total of 202 goals in 270 matches playing left winger or striker depending on the match.
With this club, he will become one of the best players in Brazil, becoming one of the best scorers of his period, he finished top scorer in the São Paulo Championship in 1950 with 22 goals then top scorer in the Rio-São Paulo Tournament in 1952 with 11 goals. He also won the Rio-São Paulo tournament in 1952.
Vasco da Gama's legendary winger
After becoming the top scorer in the history of Portuguesa in just 8 years at the club, he signed in 1953 with Vasco de Gama, one of the best clubs in the world at the time. At Vasco de Gama in a team with many stars of the time, he will establish himself and become one of the best players of the club, if not the best.
In total, he played 466 matches for Vasco de Gama and scored 189 goals, making him one of the top scorers in football history. He also finished as Vasco de Gama's player of the year 5 times in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1959 and 1960. He finally ended his career in 1963 after returning to Juventus-SP, at the age of 39.
A small international career
His first match with the Brazilian national team took place in May 1950 against Paraguay after joining the group in 1949. Not selected for the 1950 World Cup, he finally won his first international title as a starter in 1952 during the Pan-American Championship.
He participated in the 1954 World Cup where he scored 2 goals in 2 games played, his hopes of success were finally cancelled in the quarter-finals lost against the Hungarian Golden Eleven in a completely crazy match. In total, he played 17 official matches between 1950 and 1956 and scored 10 goals.
