Marek Hamšík

Slovak, Attacking Midfielder, Central Midfielder, Left Midfielder, 1m87

Nickname: "Marechiaro"

A great hope for Slovak football

Marek Hamšík was born on July 27, 1987 in Banská Bystrica, Czechoslovakia. Able to play as a central midfielder or attacking midfielder, he was trained at SK Slovan Bratislava, a very big club in Slovakia. Gifted with great talent, he made his debut in the professional world of football during the 2002/03 season.

After 6 small matches and 1 goal for his first club, he was spotted by Brescia Calcio. He established himself in the squad, enough to be finally spotted by Napoli in 2007, he joined the legendary Italian club which had just reached Serie A by finishing the following season 2nd in Serie B.

The symbol of a new golden age for Napoli

As a pure central midfielder, the player would reveal himself at the highest level of Italian football, he signed an excellent first season at the club, at 20 years old, he scored 10 goals and delivered 5 assists in 40 matches. With very good performances against AS Roma (1 goal and 1 assist), a double against Lazio Rome and 1 goal against AC Milan. The club thus reached a very good 8th place in the championship.

In May 2012, after a good 2011/12 season as an attacking midfielder (50 matches, 12 goals, 9 assists), he won the Italian Cup. He also scored the last goal of the match, which sealed the score at 2-0 in favor of Napoli against Juventus. This was the club's first trophy in 20 years.

The 2013/14 season was also an opportunity for him to win a second trophy after another successful season (41 matches, 7 goals, 9 assists), Hamšík, who was now the club's captain, took on another dimension by becoming one of the best players in the Italian championship and the leader of the Napoli midfield. Positioned behind talented players like Insigne and Mertens, the trio shone and complemented each other perfectly. Thus, on May 3, 2014, he won the Italian Cup again 3-1 against Fiorentina.

Thanks to his magic trio, Napoli experienced a new golden age. During this year 2014, he also won the Italian Super Cup, the 3rd and last trophy he won with his Italian club. But the most important thing is elsewhere, Hamšík is the striking face of this team. With his atypical style, he is recognizable.

A midfielder with great regularity and prolificity

His 2014/15 season is one of his best, the player displays monstrous statistics for an attacking midfielder who also defends a lot. Very athletic, he is a very complete midfielder who has excellent endurance, good relaxation, good footwork, excellent vision and good dribbling. He thus scores 13 goals and delivers 16 assists in 54 matches. He finishes for the second time in his career as the best passer in the Italian championship.

February 4, 2017 will remain in the memories of Neapolitan supporters since the midfielder scored a hat-trick against Bologna, enough to reach the mind-blowing score of 109 goals scored for his club, 6 goals behind the ultimate legend Diego Maradona. It was finally on December 23, 2017 that he surpassed the Argentinian legend with his 116th goal scored for Naples, a goal against Sampdoria.

Statistically, the player is very consistent, during the 2016/17 season he scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists in 49 games, while he played all his games in the central midfield position and no longer in the attacking midfield position. Announced on his departure in the summer of 2018, the player finally left Napoli in February 2019, with the status of legend. At the time of his departure, he was the record holder for games played for the club and the top scorer in the club's history (520 games, 121 goals, 104 assists), his goal record would then be broken by Dries Mertens in June 2020.

An absolute legend of Slovak football

Hamšík therefore joined Dalian Yifang in the project of a major league composed of superstars, a project that would fail. His transfer to China was estimated at 20 million euros. He stayed there for 2 years without really making his mark with his talent. He finally returned closer to his homeland, in Sweden, to IFK Göteborg, for a few matches, before ending his career in Turkey, at Trabzonspor, in 2023, when he was 36 years old.

His international career was also long, between February 2007 and June 2023, he played 138 times for Slovakia, scoring 26 goals and providing 21 assists. With his small country, he still managed to achieve the feat of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and reaching the round of 16.

He also participated in Euro 2016, again reaching the round of 16, logically eliminated 3-0 by Germany, the reigning world champion. During the qualifying matches for this Euro, he scored 5 goals and provided 1 assist. His last major tournament will be Euro 2020, which will finally take place in 2021, he is directly eliminated, but the player will have helped to shine the spotlight on his country, wearing the Slovakia jersey for almost 16 years.
