French, Righ-Back, Left-Back, 1m72

Nickname: Manu

The emergence of a generational talent

Manuel Amoros was born on February 1, 1962 in Nîmes. He was spotted by AS Monaco scouts in 1977 and learned the ropes in the club's youth categories before making his debut with the first team in the 1980/81 season. There, he established himself as one of the best full-backs in the championship.

After only 2 seasons in professional football, he was finally called up to play with the French national team and played his first match on February 23, 1982 against Italy, a great 2-0 victory. From then on, he slowly established himself as the main right-back in the French national team.

A really good international career

He then played in the 1982 World Cup at only 20 years old. With a great ball strike, he was a very complete defender. With his incredible endurance, he did not hesitate to chain runs on his right wing, without being a very fast player, he had good speed and a defensive range allowing him to block the best attackers in the world in 1 against 1.

His 1982 World Cup was perfectly managed, in a team that finished in a nice 4th place, he ended up elected best young player of the competition. He then participated in Euro 1984 and the first success of the French Team. He then played in the 1986 World Cup where he was at the top of his game, he finished in 3rd place in the tournament and had a perfect year, finishing in the World Cup team of the year and being elected best French player of the year.

A drop in level and competition with Angloma

At club level, he won 2 French championships and 1 French Cup with AS Monaco before joining Olympique de Marseille in 1989, at the age of 27. With OM, he will completely dominate the French territory and come to conquer European football. Unfortunately for him, he is the author of the missed penalty in the Champions League final against Red Star Belgrade in 1991, he loses the final. And subsequently, he loses his starting place to Jocelyn Angloma and sees from the bench OM win the Champions League in 1993.

Amoros then leaves OM to join Olympique Lyonnais before returning to Olympique de Marseille in 1995 to help the club return to the French first division. But he is seriously injured and has to end his career, he is then 34 years old.
