Lucien Muller was born in Bischwiller in Alsace, France. After a spell in the youth categories of the local club FC Bischwiller, he was recruited by RC Strasbourg, he made his debut there during the 1953/54 season at the age of 19, after 4 years, he joined Toulouse FC where he established himself as one of the best players in the country.

Very technical, he is often compared to a French legend who earned him the nickname "Little Kopa", excellent passer and formidable dribbler, he will have a good season 1957/58 where he notably scored a double against ASSE but could not prevent his team's 3-2 defeat.

His 1958/59 season was even better, confirming his incredible talent, between the 15th and 32nd matchday, he scored 9 goals while playing as an attacking midfielder. In total, he had a season with 16 goals in 41 games. Enough to earn him a great transfer to the legendary Stade de Reims.

Alongside talented players like Just Fontaine, Roger Piantoni and Jean Vincent, he finally became a French international at the end of 1959, at the age of 25. With Raymond Kopa, he formed a magnificent duo of attacking midfielders, a duo that resembled each other and came together. He won two French championships in 1960 and 1962.

Statistically speaking, his 1959/60 season was even better than his previous one, he scored 18 goals in 44 games, his last great statistical season in his history. Later, he became more of a creative player and the one who usually played attacking midfielder or right winger became a central midfielder or even a defensive midfielder to help out.

Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and return to France

In 1962, he was recruited at the age of 27 by Real Madrid, Don Luciano would establish himself there after his transfer which was huge for the time, 400,000 francs. Creator of the Real Madrid team, he played in the position of defensive midfielder/central midfielder, excellent creative player, he showed the Spanish supporters his qualities, calm, technical ease, quality of ball conservation, agility, balance and an exceptional quality of passing.

Between 1962 and 1965, he won 3 consecutive Spanish championship titles and in 1964, he reached the final of the Champions League, which he unfortunately lost to Real Madrid. And in 1965, he was recruited by FC Barcelona, ​​the rival, for whom at 31, he would become even stronger in his role. With Barcelona, ​​he became the first French player to win the Spanish Cup and then the first French player to win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

After 3 years in Barcelona, ​​he finally returned to France, after 6 years in Spain. At Stade de Reims, he returned as a legend and played 2 seasons and ended his career in 1970, at the age of 35.
