Jorge Campos Navarrete
Born October 15, 1966 in Acapulco (MEX)
Mexican, Goalkeeper/Striker, 1m68
Nicknames: El Brody, El Inmortal, Chiqui-Campos, El Chapulin
Late professional debut
Jorge Campos was born on October 15, 1966 in Acapulco, Mexico. The small-framed player began his career as a center forward for the Pumas UNAM club before playing goalkeeper. He had a tendency to play half striker and half goalkeeper.
Sometimes, he would come out of his goal, make a save in his feet then run and dribble the opposing players. He was spotted in 1983 by the Cruz Azul club, however he did not sign with the club because of his small size. A mistake, because the player was more than talented, he was crazy! Crazy talented.
In 1989, he won the CONCACAF Champions League, in which he scored a goal! He made his international debut in 1991, when he was 25 years old, the beginning of a long career with the Mexican national team. In two years, he scored 15 goals and positioned himself as both one of the best Mexican goalkeepers and one of the best attackers. He also won the Mexican championship in 1991.
One of the best goalkeepers in the world
With Jorge Campos, the entire Mexican national team would change its philosophy, the team played a much more offensive and impulsive game. Jorge Campos gradually became one of the best goalkeepers in the world, he was also voted 3rd best goalkeeper of the year 1993 by FIFA. He would also be the 8th best goalkeeper in the world in 1994 while he was still playing in the Mexican championship. Then 10th in 1996 while playing in the USA.
The Mexican Legend
With Mexico, he won 2 Gold Cups in 1993 and 1996, he also won the Confederations Cup in 1999 to everyone's surprise. With the status of one of the best players in the world, Jorge Campos joined the MLS and Los Angeles Galaxy in 1996. Known for his football and clothing style, his outfits all being chosen by the player, he was the headliner of the American championship, on June 16, 1996, he was one of the reasons for the historic attendance record in an MLS stadium, with 92,000 people present at the stadium to see him play.
Playing 16 years at the professional level, he marked his generation with his crazy goals, in total, he scored 47 goals during his career. He also scored one of the most beautiful goals scored by a goalkeeper, a scissor kick volley. He finally ended his career in 2004, when he was 38 years old. He finished in 4th place among the best goalkeepers in North and Central America according to the IFFHS in the 20th century.
