Hugo Sànchez Màrquez
Born July 11, 1958 in Mexico City (MEX)
Mexican, Striker, 1m76
Nicknames: Niño de Oro, Hugol, Pentapichichi
A dream start in Mexico
Hugo Sánchez was not a big build, at 1.76 meters tall, he had immense technical qualities and great agility. His game was based on genius actions, genius gestures, including many volleys, acrobatic return and free kicks. Hugo Sánchez had this quality to play in one touch and to score by touching the ball only once on the action.
His career began when he was only 15 years old, he will have integrated the team by dint of asking his brother and his brother's coaches to integrate him into the teams during training. He played the junior tournament of Cannes in 1975 then stole the show during the hopeful tournament of Toulon.
Very quickly nicknamed "El Niño de Oro", he signed his professional contract and participated in the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. With Pumas UNAM, he began his career and was noticed enough to be selected with the Mexican National team in 1977 when he was only 19 years old.
With Cabinho, he formed one of the most legendary duos in the history of the Mexican championship. With Pumas, he won 1 CONCACAF Champions League, 1 Copa Interamicana and 2 Mexican Championships. His talent crossed borders and in 1981, he joined Atlético Madrid.
One of the best strikers of all time
After a few months of adaptation, the player finally showed his full potential during the 1984/85 season during which he was simply phenomenal, 19 goals in the league, 3 in the Copa Del Rey, 2 in the Spanish League Cup and 1 goal in the Europa League. This wonderful season attracted the attention of Real Madrid who recruited him immediately.
This moment at Real Madrid would be the peak of his career, an undisputed starter alongside Emilio Butragueño, he formed a legendary duo and won 5 Liga, 1 Europa League, 1 Spanish Cup and 3 Spanish Super Cups.
In terms of statistics, he dominated the Spanish championship and won 5 Pichichi titles as well as the 1990 European Golden Shoe. His 1989/1990 season was undoubtedly the best of his career, 44 matches, 42 goals and 12 assists, he was at the top of his game and among the best players in the world. In total, in his career, he played 27 Champions League matches for 17 goals and 6 assists, and 18 Europa League matches for 7 goals and 3 assists. A player of big matches.
An absolute football legend
After 2 last seasons at Real Madrid complicated because of injuries, he decided to return to Mexico to Club America at 33 years old. We then thought he was at the end of his career but he would dazzle the CONCACAF Champions League, 7 goals in 6 games, he won the competition again and returned to Spain.
At Rayo Vallecano, in a small club in the Spanish championship, he had a wonderful season with 17 goals in 35 games. He then played for a few clubs in Mexico, the USA and Austria, enough to quietly retire from football in 1997, at 39 years old, in the shoes of the best player in the history of his continent.
Hugo Sánchez was also one of the best players in the history of his country's national team, in total, he played 58 times and scored 29 goals for his country. In a difficult period for Mexican football, he still reached the quarter-finals of the 1986 World Cup, an achievement that remains to this day his nation's best World Cup performance.
