A player with a poor past

György Orth was born on April 30, 1901 in Budapest. He came from a poor family and would never know his father. An anecdote tells that the friends of the young György shared their lunches with him so that he could eat during the day. Another fact is that it was his neighbors who clubbed together to pay for the young boy's last year of primary school.

When he was little, he started playing football in the streets of his city where almost all the little boys did the same thing. When he grew up, he reached almost 1.90 meters, but he was endowed with impressive flexibility. As a football player, he was endowed with exceptional technique and vision of the game.

Extraordinary precocity

He played in the youth categories of the Terézvárosi SK club before joining in 1915, at the age of 14, the Vasas SC club, then he joined Pisa Calcio in Italy in 1916, at the age of 15. György Orth made his debut with MTK Budapest in 1916, there he quickly became a key player in the squad.

Under the direction of English coach Jimmy Hogan, he became the star of the club in the Hungarian capital and at the same time, he managed to partially ease his family's financial difficulties despite the fact that football was still amateur at that time in the country. But Orth had a job in a bank, and therefore a salary.

Orth was so good despite his young age that he made his debut with the national team at only 16 years old, in a match between Hungary and Austria, a 2-1 defeat for the Hungarians, but it was the beginning of a great adventure for Orth. One of the greatest matches of his international career came in 1921, against Sweden, during a 4-2 victory for the Hungarians, Orth scored 3 goals. György Orth played a total of 33 matches with Hungary, becoming one of its first legends, scoring 13 goals for his country.

Domination then the brutal end

With Orth, MTK Budapest was the best team in the country. The player who could play in any position on the pitch was simply the best of his time for many. Alongside players such as Imre Schlosser or Alfred Schaffer, he impressed and would completely dominate the Hungarian championship. In total, he won 8 Hungarian championships and 1 Hungarian Cup, simply impressive.

In 1927, the Hungarian player left MTK for good to join the French club Olympique Marseillais. After a serious injury, the player had to end his career in 1930, while playing for Budai 11. He later became a great coach and travelled to many countries where he coached.
