Legendary Aston Villa striker
Dwight Yorke was born on November 3, 1971 in Canaan, Trinidad and Tobago. He was discovered in 1989 by the manager of Aston Villa at the time, Graham Taylor. He therefore had a trial in the English club and was finally recruited permanently in 1990. He played his first Premier League match in March 1990 against Crystal Palace.
With Aston Villa, he won 2 English League Cups and finished twice vice-champion of England in 1990 and 1993. Far from being a match to mark, he is a striker who weighs on the defenses, in particular by his desire on the field, he had a great determination and an ability to sublimate himself in complicated moments for his teams.
In total, he played 9 years at Aston Villa, playing 287 matches for 98 goals scored and a star status in England. Fast, good finisher and especially lucid in small spaces, able to combine with his teammates, he caught the eye of Alex Ferguson and Manchester United whom he joined in 1998.
The Yorke-Cole duo
Becoming a key player of this Manchester United team, he then took Teddy Sheringham's place in the hierarchy and won 3 Premier Leagues consecutively. But the 1998/99 season will be the most legendary, the player forms with Andy Cole one of the best duos in the history of the Premier League. The player slams a season with 29 goals and 19 assists in 53 matches.
In the Champions League, he has one of the best campaigns in the history of the competition, he scores 8 goals and delivers 8 assists in 11 matches played. Against Inter in the quarter-finals, he scored twice, then in the semi-finals in the second leg, he scored 1 goal and provided 1 assist.
That year, he won the Champions League, Intercontinental Cup, Premier League and FA Cup. He was then at the top of European football. Finishing as both the top scorer in the Premier League and the Champions League. He was voted best player in the Premier League in the 1998/99 season.
A historic participation in the World Cup
Unfortunately for him, the arrival of world superstar Ruud Van Nistelrooy would push the player towards the exit who left the club in 2002. He then signed for Blackburn Rovers where he was reunited with Andy Cole, who had also left Manchester United. With his two stars, Blackburn reached Europe.
In 2004, he left the club and went on to play for Birmingham City, Sydney FC and Sunderland. He finally ended his career in 2009, at the age of 37. His international career spanned 20 years, he was an international for his country in 1989 and 2009, bringing his total number of matches to 72 official matches, but with more than 100 matches played unofficially. He notably snatched a historic qualification for the 2006 World Cup, his country being eliminated in the group stages of the competition.
