Follow his brother and live his dream

Dominique Colonna was born on September 4, 1928 in Corte, Corsica, France. He began his career at the amateur club USC Cortenais. Later, he followed his brother who was a medical student in Montpellier and he signed his first professional contract with SO Montpellier. He played 13 games there before joining Stade Français.

A club that moved between the first and second divisions, it won the second French championship in 1952. But it suffered relegation again in 1955. He then joined one of the best French clubs of the time and one of the best clubs of the time, quite simply, OGC Nice.

A prominent goalkeeper in French football

He became the starting goalkeeper and won the French championship in his first season at the club. The following year, the club reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League by eliminating AGF Aarhus and Glasgow Rangers, unfortunately Colonna was beaten by Real Madrid of Alfredo Di Stéfano, future winner of the competition.

Dominique's good performances led to his call-up to the French team on October 21, 1956, he was a substitute for François Remetter during the match played in Colombes against the USSR. His adventure with the Blues was quite interesting, in a luxury substitute role, he still participated in 13 selections between 1957 and 1961, enough to be part of the 1958 World Cup adventure in the role of a substitute.

In 1957, he joined the legendary Stade de Reims, with the Rémois, he achieved the championship-French Cup double. The Champenois beat their runner-up in the championship, Nîmes Olympique 3-1, in the cup final. During this match, he was hit in the 82nd minute by Hassan Akesbi, he had to leave his place in goal to Jean Vincent and then moved to the left wing.

In 1958, he won the Champions Trophy by beating Nîmes Olympique again with a score of 2 goals to 1. In the Champions League, he reached the final but once again had to lose to Real Madrid 2-0. Despite everything, he was one of the few Reims players to have a good match, making a penalty save in the 12th minute.

Latest trophies and retirement

The following year, the Rémois triumphed again in the French championship with a seven-point lead over Nîmes Olympique and eleven over Racing Club de France, suffering only 4 defeats in 38 matches. The Champenois won the champions' challenge again at the end of the season.

With Stade de Reims, Colonna and his teammates continued to dominate French football, winning the championship again in 1962 and finishing runner-up in 1963. Dominique Colonna ended his career on this last podium, at the age of 35.
