Christopher Roland Waddle

Born December 14, 1960 in Heworth (ENG)

English, Attacking-midfielder, Left-winger, Right-winger, 1m87

Nickname: Magic Chris

Newcastle United's young star

Chris Waddle was born on December 14, 1960 in Heworth, England. Not joining a training center, he did inconclusive trials in English second-tier clubs. He then started working in the factory in order to support himself while continuing to play football.

It was in 1980, at the age of 20 that he joined Newcastle United, Chris Waddle will impose himself there by achieving incredible performances, scoring 46 goals in 169 while playing in midfield. At Newcastle United, he is part of a magnificent trio alongside Kevin Keegan and Peter Beardsley.

Wanting to join a better club, he finally signed for Tottenham in 1985 where he played 173 matches for 42 goals. At the same time, he established himself in the England national team in 1985, he notably participated in the 1986 World Cup where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

A technical and artistic player

With Tottenham, he reached the FA Cup final in 1987, he finally lost the match 3-2 after extra time against Coventry. With his high-quality playmaker, the club finished 3rd in the English championship. He followed this up with the Euro in 1988, where he was part of the Three Lions who lost their 3 group stage matches.

Chris Waddle was atypical in his style, very short shorts, long hair behind his neck and a crazy talent. Left-handed, he liked to provoke opponents, dribble them, then continue his run towards the opposing goal. His short dribbles were devastating and his repeated sprints marked his era.

The legend of Olympique de Marseille

In 1989, he was recruited by Bernard Tapid who wanted to make Olympique de Marseille one of the best clubs of the time. Bought for 45 million francs, he was one of the biggest transfers of the time, the 3rd biggest of his time, just behind Diego Maradona and Ruud Gullit.

But the beginnings were missed, the player struggled to adapt to the French championship, but not giving up, he would gradually become the favorite player of Marseille supporters. Playing left winger at Olympique de Marseille, he would become one of the best players in the history of the French championship.

He won 3 French championships in a row between 1990 and 1992 and he participated in the epics of Olympique de Marseille in the Champions League, reaching the final in 1991 against Red Star Belgrade, to everyone's surprise, the French club lost this match and Waddle left France in 1992, so he missed the French club's victory the following year.

He then joined Sheffield Wednesday where he reached the FA Cup final, he lost again against Arsenal. Despite numerous injuries, he was voted best player in the English championship in 1993. In 1996, he left the club and went on to play for English clubs until retiring in 2002, when he was 41 years old.
