The first World Cup hat-trick
Bert Patenaude was born on November 4, 1909 in Fall River, USA. Starting to play football very early, he will start playing football at the same time as Billy Gonçalves, his future teammate at Fall River Marksmen, together, they form a fantastic duo, one of the best duos in history. Patenaude as an attacker and Gonçalves as a midfielder.
Selected to play in the 1930 World Cup, the attacker will write his name in the history of football. While the USA is considered the underdog of Group D where they play against Belgium and Paraguay, the Americans will create a surprise. Patenaude will score the 3rd goal of the match against Belgium, a 3-0 victory for the USA, then a 3-0 victory against Paraguay with a hat-trick by Patenaude, the first hat-trick in the history of the World Cup.
First a controversial hat-trick with FIFA who attributed the player's second goal as an own goal by Paraguayan Ramon Gonzales, it was finally in November 2006 that FIFA reversed its decision and awarded this goal to Patenaude. With this hat-trick, the USA qualified for the semi-finals, a historic performance.
But in the semi-finals the USA were thrashed by Argentina 6-1, a humiliation and a score that would tarnish the performance of the American players. Despite the lack of information on the score of the match for 3rd place, FIFA decided and awarded the USA this bronze medal in the competition. The USA created the surprise of the tournament. Patenaude had a very good World Cup, finishing 3rd best scorer of the competition and named in the typical team of the tournament.
One of the best CONCACAF players of his era
In addition to being one of the best players in the CONCACAF region, winning the title of best player of the region twice in 1930 and 1932, he won 3 US championships and 3 US Cups, truly becoming one of the best players in the history of the USA. Finally, it was at the age of 27 that he retired, the great economic depression causing a decline in football in the country.
