He started playing at a young age and at the age of 9 he joined the training center of Austria Vienna, a legendary Austrian club and also his favorite club. He joined the first team in the 1982/83 season, from there, it was the beginning of a real goal machine.
In 1985, he won his first professional titles, the Austrian Cup and Championship. In total, he played 145 matches for his training club and scored 119 goals, enough to attract the attention of bigger European clubs, and that's the case, in 1987 he joined Torino.
A nice career
Joining an ambitious Serie A team, the player will have a complicated but promising season, despite everything, he will be transferred to FC Seville, in Spain. There, he will establish himself as one of the best center forwards in Europe, piling up goals. He then has 2 experiences in lower clubs at CD Logroñés and Rayo Vallecano where he always proves decisive.
Eager for a change of scenery, he joined FC Cologne in 1993, the beginning of one of the most beautiful pages of his career. In Cologne, he will score 83 goals in 160 games then join Borussia Mönchengladbach where he plays 43 games for 18 goals. He then returns home, to Austria, in 2000 where he ends his career at the age of 36.
A legend of Austrian football
Anton Polster was a formidable scorer with good technical quality despite his 1.88m. He was an effective striker, even to celebrate his goals, he was content to throw himself into the arms of his teammates and then greet the public.
He also had a great international career in a minor football country at the time, he still participated in 2 World Cups in 1990 and 1998, he scored his only goal in the World Cup during the 1998 edition where he scored a goal against Cameroon, allowing his team to snatch a point.
In total, he was an Austrian international between 1982 and 2000, wearing his nation's jersey 95 times, and scoring 44 goals. Polster was also part of the typical team of the 20th century of the Austrian selection in 1999 by the Austrian daily "Kronen Zeitung".
