From Scotland to Liverpool
Alex Raisbeck was born on December 26, 1878 in Polmont, Scotland. He began his football career in 1896 at Hibernian, one of the best clubs in his native country. He spent two seasons there, building a reputation as a defensive center-half. In 1898, he joined Stoke City and was immediately spotted by Liverpool, who bought him in May 1898 for £350.
One of Liverpool FC's first legends
The association between the Scottish player and the English club was an immediate success. With Raisbeck, Liverpool won their first English championship title in the 1900/01 season. At the club, he held the position of player and invoice inspector, thus being paid by the club at a time when professionalism was not common. He was therefore in charge of public signs and display boards for future Liverpool matches.
Captain of the team, the player remained loyal to his team despite the club's relegation in the 1903/04 season. In the second division, the club was far superior to the competition and returned to the English elite at the end of the season. During the 1905/06 season, he won the English championship again and established himself as one of the best defenders of all time and an absolute legend of his club.
An iconic leader
His international career began in 1900, he played a total of 8 matches for his country between 1900 and 1907, winning 4 British Home Championships as captain of the team. An incredible leader, he left Liverpool in 1909, at the age of 30. He then returned to Scotland to play for Partick Thistle.
Once again captain for his new team, the defender was exceptional and commanded the respect of his teammates. However, injuries would somewhat slow down the end of his career and cause him to miss a few matches. In 1914, he joined Hamilton Academical where he held a position as player-coach before retiring at the age of 37.
