The powerful Hungarian winger
Vilmos Kohut was born on July 17, 1906 in Budapest, Hungary. He began his football career in 1924 at Ferencváros when he was only 18 years old. He quickly became the club's attraction, fast, strong, powerful and a very good finisher, he became one of the best wingers in the country. And less than 1 year after his debut, he was already called to play with the Hungarian national team, the beginning of an international career that would last more than 13 years.
Blessed with impressive physical qualities, the 1m76 player will quickly establish himself as one of the leading players in Eastern Europe. At the age of 21, he was voted the best Hungarian player of the year in 1927. The following year, he won the prestigious Mitropa Cup. With the Hungarian club, he also won 4 Hungarian Championships and 3 Hungarian Cups.
A powerful left foot
His fame crossing borders, he finally signed in 1933 with Olympique de Marseille, in France. There, he became one of the biggest footballing attractions in the country. He was the star of the club and would dazzle the supporters of the club in the south of France for 6 years. With a team full of great talents, the club would experience its first golden age. He won the French championship in 1937 and finished runner-up in 1938 and 1939. He also won 2 French Cups in 1935 and 1938 and lost a final in 1934. Vilmos Kohut then became one of the first legends of the club.
Nicknamed the "Hungarian cannon", he was a player with an overpowering left foot capable of scoring crazy goals. He had an overpowering shot capable of terrorizing any goalkeeper. According to legend, he could break the crossbars.
A surprising last dance with Hungary
His career with Hungary would have a surprising end. While he had not played a match for his country since 1932, he took part in the 1938 World Cup which took place in France. For his return to the Hungarian national team, he scored 1 goal against the Netherlands, he also played the match against Switzerland but lost his place and had to watch from the bench as Hungary lost the final 4-2 against Italy. He finally retired the following year in 1939, the French championship being interrupted by the start of the Second World War, he was then 32 years old.
