The German Rocket

Ulrich Hoeneß was born on January 5, 1952 in Ulm, Germany. He was recruited in 1970 by FC Bayern Munich when he was only 18 years old. Despite his age, he became a major player in the club, which was on the rise, upon his arrival. Very fast, he held the 100m record for a football player for a while with 11 seconds. He is a winger with an extraordinary technique and a vision of the game that only the greatest players in history have.

Capable of playing right winger, attacking midfielder or left winger, he quickly became one of the best players in the world in his position. During the 1970/71 season, he scored only 7 goals and provided 5 assists in 43 games. But he became an indisputable player in his position for his liveliness.

A versatile and decisive player

It was the 1971/72 season that propelled him into another dimension, mainly used as a left midfielder, the player saw his statistics explode. In 47 games, he scored 17 goals and provided 17 assists. On November 16, 1971, he also provided a hat-trick of assists against Hannover 96. Then in the eighth-finals of the Champions League against Liverpool, he scored 1 goal and provided 1 assist, almost single-handedly helping his team qualify.

The following season, he continued to score goals, scoring 22 goals and providing 6 assists in 48 club games. But it was during the 1973/74 season that he had the best season of his career. In 48 games, he scored 25 goals and provided 11 assists, all while playing as an attacking midfielder. The great strength of this player, he could play in any attacking position. A goal machine. Over the season, in all competitions, he played 65 games, scored 24 goals and provided 14 assists. He was then at the top of his game, he won the Champions League, scoring twice in the final against Atlético Madrid. Then he won the World Cup with West Germany.

The injury that ended his career

But the following year, he seriously injured his knee in the Champions League final, this injury stopped his progress and forced him to end his career in 1979 after leaving for 1. FC Nuremberg in 1978, the player being physically exhausted at only 27 years old.
