Sergio Leonel Agüero del Castillo

Born June 2, 1988 in Buenos Aires

Argentinian, Striker, Second Striker, 1.73m

Nicknames: "Kun"

A small forward with incredible talent

Sergio Agüero was born on June 2, 1988, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After joining the CA Independiente youth system in 1997, he made his first-team debut on July 5, 2003, against San Lorenzo, at the age of 15 years and 35 days. He also became the youngest player to have played in the Argentine First Division.

Having played only one match in his debut season, it wasn't until the 2004/05 season that the player scored his first goals and, more importantly, gradually established himself within the team. It was the 2005/06 season that finally exploded onto the scene in Argentina, with a 36-game season and 18 goals.

The Prince of Atlético Madrid

Considered one of the greatest prospects in Argentine football, he was immediately signed by Atlético Madrid. Shortly after his arrival, the player was already the subject of controversy after scoring using his hand against Recreativo de Huelva.

Scoring a few goals with Atlético Madrid in his first season, the second season would be the one of his breakthrough for the player, who played either at the forefront of the attack or as a second striker. Impressive in all areas—dribbling, finishing, positioning, and disrupting the defense—the 19-year-old is impressive: 50 games, 27 goals, and 13 assists, including 19 goals and 10 assists in the league, and 5 goals and 2 assists in the Europa League.

He continued his winning ways the following season, scoring 21 goals and 15 assists in 47 games. Where Agüero stood out from other strikers was his ability to set up his teammates, a key strength of his game. The 2009/10 season was a breakthrough season for the player, who won the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.

His final season with Atlético Madrid was also excellent, scoring 27 goals and providing 7 assists in 41 matches. He then surprisingly joined a recently acquired club with great ambitions: Manchester City.

The King of Manchester City, Mr. Consistency

For around €45 million, the Argentinian striker then joined the world of English football, where he quickly settled in and established himself as one of the best strikers on the planet. He scored 30 goals and provided 10 assists in 48 matches in his first season. The 2007 Golden Boy then became the star of the new Manchester City, which would dominate English football in the 2010s alongside Manchester United. Voted his club's best player in his first season, he would go down in English league legend by scoring the goal that clinched the Premier League title for Manchester City against Manchester United in the final minute of the final matchday. A moment etched in the history of the sport, a moment frozen in time during that historic 95th minute of the 2011/12 season.

From then on, the Argentinian striker would go on to produce a string of top-class seasons with great consistency, playing as a striker, second striker, false 9, left winger, right winger, or even attacking midfielder, as his offensive range was so complete:

2012/13: 40 matches, 17 goals, 3 assists

2013/14: 34 matches, 28 goals, 9 assists

2014/15: 42 matches, 32 goals, 9 assists

2015/16: 44 matches, 29 goals, 5 assists

2016/17: 45 matches, 33 goals, 7 assists

2017/18: 39 matches, 30 goals, 7 assists

2018/19: 46 matches, 32 goals, 10 assists Decisive

2019/20: 32 matches, 23 goals, 3 assists

Then, during his final season with Manchester City, the team's legendary striker suffered from injuries and the coronavirus. He only appeared in 20 matches, scoring 6 goals and providing 1 assist. He finally reached the Champions League final, but came on as a substitute early in the match, but was unable to change the score to 1-0 in favor of Chelsea FC.

Early retirement

At the age of 33 and a free agent, the Argentinian decided to sign with FC Barcelona. Injured at the start of the season due to a torn inner calf tendon, he made his debut in October. He then scored a goal in the El Clásico against Real Madrid, a 2-1 defeat.

But at the end of October, the player suddenly felt a pain in his heart during the match against Alavés. He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent tests and was diagnosed with a heart rhythm disorder. In December, the player made the difficult decision to end his career at only 33 years old.

A disappointment with the Albiceleste

Sergio Agüero had a rather decent career with the Argentina national team. He had an exceptional U20 World Cup in 2007, where he was voted the competition's best player with 6 goals and 4 assists in 7 matches. He then won the U20 World Cup.

A capped off with the Argentina first team in 2006 at just 18 years old, he gradually took on a prominent role in the squad, where he was constantly in competition with Gonzalo Higuaín, the other great Argentine striker of his generation. Agüero is much more technical, better at building up the play, but perhaps considered a less adept finisher.

Agüero, like Higuaín, has this unfortunate tendency to underperform with Argentina in major competitions. He completely missed out on his 2010 and 2014 World Cups, before putting in a 2018 World Cup that was a mix of poor and just-about-just-right performances.

He won the Copa America in 2021, but he never had a key performance in a major competition with his country, the only downside of his career, along with never having won the Champions League. He played a total of 101 matches, including 41 appearances and 19 assists, for Argentina.
