Early career and World War II
Ottmar Walter was born on March 6, 1924 in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He began his playing career during the 1941/42 season, when he was a car mechanic. But his career had to stop because of the Second World War, so he joined the Kriegsmarine as a volunteer from July 1942 until the capitulation of 1945.
He still played football, as a guest player, for the Holstein clubs Kiel and Cuxhavener SV. There, he became an excellent striker and scored many important goals. During a battle, he was injured in the right knee by 3 shell fragments and was diagnosed as a war wounded. Then he was taken prisoner by the American and English forces.
Legend of Kaiserslautern
He was finally released on October 2, 1946 and returned directly to Kaiserslautern where he found his youth team. He won the regional championship alongside his brother Fritz, both were among the top scorers in the championship, 24 goals for Fritz and 22 for Ottmar.
During his career with Kaiserslautern, he participated in 36 finals and scored 29 goals. In total, he participated in 42 finals in his career, and scored 32 goals. He is also one of the best scorers in the history of Kaiserslautern for whom he scored 295 goals in 275 matches. He finally retired the same year as his brother, in 1959.
The legend of Germany
But where the Walter brothers made history was with the German national team, together they allowed their country to win the first World Cup in their history. A World Cup won 3-2 against a Hungarian team that was the overwhelming favourite on paper. In total, Ottmar played in 21 matches and scored 10 goals with the German team between 1950 and 1956.
