The ravages of war
Maurice Baudier was born on July 22, 1897 in Avallon, France. In 1915, he joined the CA Paris club, the Cercle Athlétique de Paris. But the First World War abruptly put an end to his football career. When he was 20, he was seriously poisoned by gases sent into the trenches during the conflict. These gases disabled the player by 20% in his lungs. He eventually received the Croix de Guerre for his courage.
A life destroyed by war
Following the conflict, he rejoined CA Paris. His great liveliness and good reflexes allowed him to become one of the best goalkeepers in the country. A very good goalkeeper when it came to diving at the feet of his opponents to take the ball, he joined the French national team in 1921.
He would play a total of 3 matches for his country in 1921, between February and March. Great performances as an individual despite 3 defeats. France was at that time only a small team in European football. He notably played a very good match against Italy, defeated 2-1.
But the player was very quickly caught up by health problems and only 2 years after his football career began, he was forced to stop playing this sport. This would take his life shortly after, he died in March 1932, at only 34 years old.
