From the great hope of Cameroonian football to join Europe
Marc-Vivien Foé was born on May 1, 1975 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He began his football career at the age of 17 in the Canon Yaoundé club, one of the country's major clubs. At 18, he won the Cameroon Cup and made a name for himself in the country, allowing him to become a Cameroonian international.
He then participated in the 1994 World Cup before being tracked by Auxerre, but it was RC Lens that would sign the promising young player. At 19, he already signed in Europe with a legendary club in the French landscape. With an impressive physique and great dedication in midfield, he was recruited and appreciated by the coach of the time.
A historic title
His first season was quite complicated, with tough competition in midfield, he then became a substitute. It was finally during the 1996/97 season that he finally became an occasional starter. Despite everything, he suffered a few injuries and suspensions, he had difficulty exceeding 20 matches per season but was appreciated at the club.
During the 1997/98 season, he was one of the players in this legendary team that won a historic French championship title. In midfield, he brought a physical supplement and a defensive base. The player unfortunately experienced a complicated end to the season, with a broken leg that prevented him from participating in the 1998 World Cup.
Good seasons
Upon his return from injury, the player, who was already 24 years old, was transferred to England, to West Ham. This change of club was a great success, he found consistency and seemed far from injuries. He also won the 2000 African Cup of Nations. After this very good season which was undoubtedly the best of his career, he decided to return to France, to Olympique Lyonnais.
He stayed there for 2 years, the time to win the French championship again and to win the League Cup. In his momentum, he participated in the 2002 World Cup but struggled to convince as did his team. On his return to Lyon, he was no longer in the coach's plans and was loaned to Manchester City.
The shock, the nightmare
Author of a rather good season, he arrived at 28 years old at a good period of his career, however everything would change during the Confederations Cup. Reaching the semi-finals of the competition against Colombia, the player who was starting would collapse on the field in the 72nd minute. Unconscious, he was taken to the nearest hospital by the medics. Barely 45 minutes later, the news was announced, the player had died.
It was later learned that the player had suffered a heart attack due to an enlarged heart. He had been born with a congenital malformation.
