Jocelyn Gaëtan Angloma

Born August 7, 1965 in Les Abymes (GLP)

French, right-back, defensive-midifelder, center-back, 1m80

Great hope for French football

Jocelyn Angloma was born in Les Abymes in Guadeloupe, very early he started playing football and joined the Etoile Morne-à-l'eau team. At 20, he decided to join Stade Rennais and mainland France, a very good choice since a little over two months after his arrival, he already played his first professional match in the Coupe de France.

At that time he was a good midfielder, in the defensive midfield position. After 2 seasons in Rennes, he joined LOSC. There, he became a right-back. He also established himself as one of the best full-backs in the championship. Very offensive, he scored 13 goals for LOSC in 104 matches.

The man who played for 2 rivals

It was finally at PSG that he left and had another great season, scoring 6 goals in 39 games, still at right-back. It was also at this time that he had his first match in the French team during a 2-1 victory against Czechoslovakia on October 13, 1990, in a team coached by a certain Michel Platini.

After his good season, he finally signed for Olympique de Marseille, PSG's rival, who had just lost a Champions League final against Red Star Belgrade and who were looking for European success. This choice to leave the capital would be the right one, he won the French championship in 1992 and then the Champions League in 1993. However, this 1993 Champions League final would not have been the dream for the French defender, in fact, he fractured his tibia at the hour mark during a contact with Lentini. He would later say that it was heartbreaking to see his friends celebrate the victory without him.

Unfortunately, the following season OM was the victim of the match-fixing scandal in Ligue 1 and was administratively relegated to the second division, so he left the club after 3 years in the south of France.

A very beautiful career

The adventure in the French team was complicated, in a dark period of French football (national team), he nevertheless won the European Under-21 Championship in 1988 alongside Eric Cantona and Laurent Blanc, but it was the competition that would deprive him of a greater career in the French team, in fact, with the emergence of Lilian Thuram in 1996, he would never play in the French team again and his total number with France would be 37 matches.

In club, after his adventure in Marseille, he decided to travel a little, first in Italy, where he spent 3 years, at Torino then at Inter Milan where he was each time an undisputed starter. He also reached the final of the Europa League in 1997 with Inter but lost against Schalke 04.

He then left for 5 years in Spain at FC Valencia where he played 2 Champions League finals, all lost in 2000 and 2001. In 2002, when he was almost 37 years old, he decided to end his career, a career rich in trophies and high-level matches. Subsequently, he returned to Étoile Morne-à-l'eau where he played at a lower level until he was 42 years old.
