Short career period in Hungary

István Nyers was born on May 25, 1924 in Merlebach, France. The son of a miner, he returned to Hungary with his family very early, where he played for various clubs in the city of Budapest. Extremely talented, he played for several Hungarian clubs and then joined the Újpesti Torna Egylet club, with whom he had a very good 1945/46 season, scoring 18 goals in 20 games.

On the strength of this very good season, he was called up twice to the Hungarian national team, 2 games, 2 goals. Nyers was already one of the best strikers in Europe. Alongside Hidegkuti, Puskás and Zsengellér, he formed a superb attacking line.

Inter Milan legend

He then left for Czechoslovakia to join FK Viktoria Zizkov, which ended his short international career, already at the age of 22. He only played 3 matches for his club before returning to his native France and the Stade Français club. In France, he improved enormously, especially technically, and in 62 matches, he scored 34 goals. Playing left winger or striker, he attracted the attention of a legendary club: Inter Milan.

Initially reluctant to join the Nerazzurri, he was forced to join the Italian club while the Stade Français club was sinking. In search of trophies, Inter would immediately fall under Nyers' spell. Nyers' 1948/49 season was magnificent, in 36 league games, he scored 26 goals and finished top scorer in Serie A.

Alongside striker Amedeo Amadei and Faas Wilkes, he formed a legendary trio, although the trophies did not arrive. Nyers had incredible athletic qualities, including incredible speed, he ran 100 meters in just 11 seconds. Becoming one of the greatest legends of the Milan club, he scored 133 goals in 188 games between 1948 and 1954 for Inter.

He won 2 Serie A games there and only left the Italian club after a financial dispute, the club not wanting to increase the player's salary. Nyers then left for Switzerland and Servette Geneva. However, he did not play there and he finally returned to Italy, to AS Roma the same year.

One of the greatest What Ifs in football history

At the time, many Hungarian fans were wondering: Would Hungary have won the World Cup with Nyers? There is much speculation about this subject. But we will never know, what we can know is that Nyers is undoubtedly one of the best players in the history of the Milan Derby with 11 goals in 12 games.

At AS Roma, Nyers continued to impress with his level and in 2 seasons, he participated in 54 games for 20 goals. He then made a stint at FC Barcelona during a friendly match and quietly ended his career in Spain and then in Italy. And he ended his career in 1961 at the age of 37.
