A goalkeeper with a strong character
François Remetter was born on August 8, 1928 in Strasbourg, he spent his entire childhood in the town of Rouget de l'Isle, where he discovered his passion for football, playing with balls made of rags on Place Kléber.
He joined the youth categories of the SOC club, the Strasbourg Olympique Club, where he first played as a striker before finally becoming a goalkeeper when he left for the other club in the city, Racing Club Strasbourg.
Remetter fell in love with this position as he stopped his teammates' shots in training. With undeniable talent, he became an official goalkeeper of the club, playing without gloves or a cap, he wore a legendary black sweater with a red stripe. With RC Strasbourg, he was however a victim of competition. With a great character, he did not want to be a substitute and he left for a year at CS Le Thillot before joining FC Metz in 1950 when he was only 22 years old.
His first steps with the French national team
In 1947, he had the opportunity to join the French military team, which was to be crowned world champion during a 3-1 victory against Turkey in front of just over 60,000 people. When he arrived in Metz, the club was then in the French second division. With Remetter in goal and Thadée Cisowski in attack, the club returned to the first division.
The Metz team then went on to play seasons in the middle of the table of the French first division. Remetter was called to play for the first time in the French team in 1953, when the team was then coached by Pierre Pibarot. However, he could not prevent his team from losing 1-0 to Sweden in his first match.
He then played 17 matches in a row with France, a very rare thing at the time as the goalkeepers in the French team changed regularly. François Remetter was then one of the best goalkeepers in the country and the continent despite his 1.71m. And it was finally FC Sochaux who came to recruit the goalkeeper for 13 million old francs in 1954 after his participation in the World Cup that year.
A legend of French football
Extremely flexible, he was nicknamed the "voltigeur" and established himself in his new club, in a team bringing together several French internationals, the club struggled to hold on to the top places in the championship. And in 1957, after 3 years at the club, he fell out with the club president about his salary, so he preferred to leave the club and join the Girondins de Bordeaux while they were in the French second division. A choice that paid off, since with its new goalkeeper, Bordeaux reached the first division at the end of the season. And Remetter took part in the 1958 World Cup.
While he was a starter in the first 2 matches, a 7-3 victory against Paraguay and a 3-2 defeat against Yugoslavia, he finally became Claude Abbès' replacement in the 3rd match because of the team's excessive number of goals conceded. France then reached a historic place: 3rd place at the World Cup.
Remetter was then almost 28 years old and was playing his last matches with the French national team. His last match would come in 1959, on December 17, against Spain, led by a certain Di Stéfano. France won 4-3. In total, he would have played in 26 matches for France, conceding 33 goals and keeping 7 clean sheets.
After the 1958 World Cup, he left for Grenoble, which played in the French second division, then for Limoges, a mid/lower-table club in the first division. After these 2 short experiences, he returned to RC Strasbourg, which was in the French second division.
He was one of the great architects of RC Strasbourg's rise to the first division and he rubbed shoulders with Robert Jonquet. When he was 36, the club's management pushed him out. He therefore reluctantly joined Limoges in the French second division, where he was completely free in his game. He was also lined up a few times as a striker for the team and managed to score a goal in a friendly match against Nice 3-3. The player finally retired from professional football in 1966, at the age of 38.
