A very good start
Coenraadt 'Coen' Moulijn was born on 15 February 1937 in Rotterdam and grew up in the old north of the city. As a little anecdote, around the corner lived the much younger Wim Jansen, another Feyenoorder par excellence, who followed the exploits of his famous neighbour with great interest. Moulijn practiced his kick against a wall that Jansen later also used.
Moulijn made his debut at the age of 17 for the football club Xerxes, a club from Rotterdam. The player shines despite his young age and after a season as a starter for his first club, he leaves Xerxes for Feyenoord, who have just bought him for 25,000 guilders.
Mr Feyenoord
The Dutch winger will play his first match with Feyenoord on 18 September 1955. It is love at first sight. Becoming the legendary left winger of this Dutch team, he was a twirling winger, very skillful and a very good passer. As a pillar of the team, he was crowned national champion five times, won the KNVB Cup twice and helped Feyenoord become a football superpower. In 1970, 15 years after his arrival, it was the consecration for the winger who allowed his team to win a Champions League against Celtic Glasgow and then win the 1970 Intercontinental Cup against Estudiantes de la Plata.
Loyal to his club, Moulijn never wanted to leave Feyenoord, although the offers were there. In the early 1960s, it was FC Barcelona in particular who tried to recruit the player, without success. Nicknamed "Mister Feyenoord", the winger played 487 official matches and scored 84 goals with the club.
A player of exceptional class
His special dribble was a kind of feint, he dove inside before going outside, he repeated this gesture year after year, always with the same success. The foot stuck so well to his foot that few defenders were able to beat him one on one.
Considered the Johan Cruyff of Feyenoord, he will have left his mark on the history of his club. In addition to that, he will also have been a legend of the Dutch national team with whom he played 38 matches for 4 goals. He will have lived 2 historic matches in the history of his selection, the victories against Belgium 7 goals to 2 in 1958 and 6 goals to 2 in 1961.
It is logical that he was elected best player in the history of Feyenoord in 1999, he will remain this discreet and humble man who continued to support his team of always. Unfortunately, Coen Moulijn passed away on 4 January 2011 at the age of 73, struck by a stroke on New Year's Eve. His death caused considerable emotion in Rotterdam, where he was one of the most popular figures. It is not uncommon for De Kuip to sing a song in his honour. The club's mascot is called "Coentje", his other nickname, a little wink. There is also a life-size bronze statue of him that looks out over the stadium forecourt. A first for a Dutch player well before Cruyff. Absolute class.
