Gyula Zsengellér was born on December 27, 1915 in Cegléd, Hungary. He started playing football in the neighborhoods of his hometown of Cegléd in 1929 when he was 14 years old, he joined the city of Salgótarjáni the following year where he continued to play football.
He finally joined the first team of Salgótarjáni BTC in 1931. And during his last season at the club, in 24 games, he scored 19 goals when he was only 20 years old. Unfortunately, even though his individual statistics are flattering, his team is relegated to the Hungarian second division at the end of this final season.
More than just a striker
Zsengellér is a very modern player, with an extraordinary vision of the game and formidable technique. He is also described as an intelligent player on and off the field. This earned him the nickname "Professor" because he has an incredible culture and an excellent command of Latin and French. On the field, he showed great athletic qualities as well as great technical qualities, a complete striker.
After his first season, he joined one of the biggest clubs in Hungary, Ujpest FC, where he would stay for almost 11 years. With Zsengellér, the club asserted its status as a great club during a period marked by the Second World War. In 11 years with Ujpest FC, the player won the 1939 Mitropa Cup and 4 Hungarian championship titles in 1939, 1945, 1946 and 1947.
The rivalry with György Sárosi
A rival of the other Hungarian legend György Sárosi who played for the other big club in the country, Ferencváros, he showed incredible talent and consistency. Individually, he is one of the most decisive players in the history of Hungarian football.
Obtaining the title of top scorer of the Hungarian championship 5 times in 1938 (31 goals), 1939 (56 goals), 1943 (26 goals), 1944 (33 goals) and 1945 (36 goals), he established himself as one of the best players of his time. His 1939 year was such that he finished as the world's top scorer in the championship.
One of the best scorers in football history
After 11 years, in 1949, Zsengellér left Ujpest FC to join AS Roma at the age of 31. In total, he scored 415 goals for his Hungarian club in 350 matches. In Italy, he was considered an experienced player at the highest level. After 2 seasons, he left for Serie C in Ancona before joining Latin America and Colombia to play for another 2 years. He then ended his career in 1953 at the age of 37.
His career with the Hungarian national team was also very good, in total, he played 39 matches for Hungary and scored 32 goals. He took part in the 1938 World Cup in France and reached the final, which he lost 4-2 to Italy, but he left his mark on the competition, scoring 5 goals in 4 games. He finished in the competition's best team.
His last match with Hungary took place on 20 August 1947 in Budapest against Albania, an easy 3-0 victory. He then left the place to his successor, a certain Ferenc Puskás who at 20 years old seemed to take over perfectly from the Ujpest legend.
