Vincent Peter Jones
Born January 5, 1965 in Watford (ENG)
Welsh, Defensive Midfielder, 1m81
Nickname: The Axe
A completely crazy player
Vinnie Jones was born on January 5, 1965 in Watford, England. He left a broken family home to begin his football career. In the 1980s, he played for amateur club Wealdstone before joining IFK Holmsund in Sweden. But it was ultimately at Wimbledon that he experienced a meteoric rise.
From an anonymous player in the British championship, he became a prominent face of football in the country. In the Crazy Gang known for their violent play, he played alongside Dennis Wise, John Fashanu and Lawrie Sanchez. A team that played long balls to its attackers and based its defensive play on physicality and rough play. One of his victims was Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, to whom he famously told after a tackle "Do that one more time, mate, and I'll rip your ear off and shit in the hole" before pulling the Scot's ear at every corner.
He invented countless ways to hurt, intimidate and humiliate his opponents over the years. He had two short spells at Leeds and Chelsea before finally returning to Wimbledon in 1992.
The birth of an English championship monster
Another crazy moment in his career came in 1994, when Wimbledon were in Norway for a pre-season friendly, the Welsh player, who had been drinking all night and getting into a fight, missed the team bus to the stadium. The player then walked the entire distance at night (about 20 kilometers), he settled on the bench and slept there, he entered during the match and injured an opposing player in the head, Jones' victim was taken straight to hospital.
Vinnie Jones was a pure defensive midfielder whose physical qualities were impressive, strength, endurance, vertical jump, balance, he shone for this in lower-ranked clubs. Far from being a fine technician, he knew his status and played on it. His style of play was organized around his famous "pants marking", that is to say not letting go of his opponent for a second, during the entire match.
The Gascoigne affair
Something he achieved in 1988 against Paul Gascoigne, harassing him throughout the match, the Welsh defensive midfielder would make national and international buzz after grabbing his opponent's testicles with his full hand. An action to which he added this sentence: "My name is Vinnie Jones, I'm a gypsy, I earn a lot of money and I'm going to bite your ear off, then spit it all out in the grass. You're alone, big guy, all alone with me".
Paul Gascoigne testified: "The whole time, I felt his breath behind me, like a dragon. I never complained about being tackled, but each time it was pure aggression! At one point, he spat in my face and said: "I'm just going to take a corner, but don't worry, big guy, I'll be right back!" "
A real madman, he had a brief career with the Welsh national team, 9 small matches between 1994 and 1997, already at the end of his career. But he was not only a crazy player, he was also a crazy person, he was sentenced to 100 hours of community service following a violent argument with one of his neighbors.
He also regularly fought with gypsies, many scars on his face can attest to it. He then got into the habit of taking a baseball bat to each training session. All this visibility allowed him to have a career as an actor following his football career which ended in 1999 when he was 34 years old.
