Oliver Bierhoff

Born on May 1st, 1968 in Karlsruhe (GER)

German, Striker, 1m91

Nickname: Ollie

A difficult professional start

Oliver Bierhoff was born on May 1, 1968 in Karlsruhe, Germany. He was an imposing striker, 1.91 meters tall. A fox in the box, his offensive game was based on his physique and his incredible ability to score goals with his head.

During the first years of his career, that is to say between 1986 and 1990, he was an anonymous striker in the German championship and no one predicted a great future for him. He went into exile in Austria, in a minor European championship, it was the beginning of a great series of goals scored, the player finished top scorer in the Austrian championship with 23 goals.

After this season spent in Austria, he was recruited by Inter Milan. But he would not play a single match for Inter, in fact, he was a victim of competition with Klinsmann and Delvecchio. He was therefore logically loaned to Ascoli Calcio 1898, a minor club in the Italian championship. During the 1992/93 season, he finished top scorer in the Italian D2 championship with 20 goals.

The hero of Germany

In 1995, the player signed for Udinese, which was then in Serie A. There, his statistics were impressive and he became one of the best strikers in the championship. During his first season, he scored 17 goals in 31 games. The German coach at the time, Berti Vogts, then gave him his chance for Euro 1996 when he was already 28 years old.

But the player was only the 5th striker in the coach's hierarchy. During the group stage of Euro 1996, he only played 8 minutes against the Czech Republic and 85 minutes against Russia. He did not play the quarter-final and the semi-final. During the final, he replaced Mehmet Scholl in the 69th minute.

While the Czech Republic is winning the match, the entry of Bierhoff will change everything, the striker scores after only 4 minutes on the field, his goal allows to have an equalizer and extra time. Then he scores a second goal, signing a double and giving the final victory to Germany.

A Serie A legend

Following Euro 1996, Bierhoff had a new status, and in the 1997/98 season he finished top scorer in Serie A with 27 goals scored and finished in an excellent 3rd place in the championship with Udinese. His magnificent season opened the doors to AC Milan, which he joined in the summer of 1998.

The 1998/99 season was the one of his consecration, the player finally won Serie A. He also formed a magnificent trio with Zvonimir Boban and George Weah. His time at AC Milan was synonymous with a rise to the German national team, where he became one of the key players in the starting team.

Between 1998 and 2001, he was the captain of the German national team and he had an exceptional 1998 World Cup as an individual, in 5 games played (eliminated in the quarter-finals), he scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists. Then he was part of the groups of Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup, but he had a substitute role. In total, he will have played 70 games for Germany and will have scored 37 times, while providing 11 assists.
