Bernard Lama

Born April 7, 1963 in Saint-Symphorien (FRA)

French, Goalkeeper, 1m83

Nicknames: The Cat, The Jaguar

From anonymous talent...

Bernard Lama was born on April 7, 1963 in Saint-Symphorien in France. Trained at USL Montjoly in Guyana, he was quickly spotted by LOSC and joined the French metropolis when he came of age. First loaned to SC Abbeville then to RCFC Besançon in Ligue 2, he returned to LOSC and played good matches, more than a hundred in total. He was ultimately not kept despite his immense talent.

To one of the best goalkeepers in the world

He therefore played several clubs in the French championship before settling for a short time at PSG in 1992, when he was already 29 years old. There, he became one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, his prime came between 1993 and 1997. During this period, he had 2 magnificent seasons.

His 1995/96 season was stratospheric, 44 matches played for 38 goals conceded and 19 clean sheets. Playing in the Cup Winners' Cup, he won the trophy after having kept three clean sheets in a row in the competition, two in the semi-finals against Deportivo La Coruña and one in the final against Rapid Vienna.

Bernard Lama participated in Euro 1996 as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. With his very elegant and aerial style, he seemed to be flying, gliding to stop the balls and catch them in the clearance. A very classy goalkeeper. He had a magnificent Euro individually.

The 1996/97 season was sadder, still playing in the Cup Winners' Cup, he unfortunately lost the final but affirmed his status as a great football goalkeeper. During this season, he played 44 matches for 45 goals conceded and 20 clean sheets.

A disappointing end to his career despite numerous trophies

Unfortunately, the sequel would be less glorious, victim of a serious injury at the start of the 1996/97 season, he had lost his starting place in the French team to Fabien Barthez who was now untouchable. Then in January 1997, he tested positive for cannabis, became undesirable at PSG, he was transferred to West Ham, a failure on the sporting level.

He returned directly to PSG in 1998 but seemed to have lost his agility, still participated in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with the French team but as a substitute. He ended his career after a final season at Stade Rennais during the 2000/01 season. He was then 38 years old.
